La'Shawn Allen-Muhammad is an economic mobility leader, community advocate, and the Executive Director of the Central Brooklyn Economic Development Corporation (CBEDC), a 35-year-old nonprofit organization dedicated to revitalizing the local economy. Born and raised in the vibrant and resilient Brownsville section of Brooklyn, La'Shawn has dedicated her life to fostering economic equity, and educational opportunities for community residents.
Growing up in Brownsville, La'Shawn witnessed both the challenges and untapped potential of her neighborhood. Her early experiences instilled a deep sense of purpose and a commitment to making a positive impact. This drive led her to pursue higher education and personal development, culminating in her becoming a Certified Executive Coach in 2018 through the Howard University Executive MBA program, where she now serves as a member of its Advisory Board.
With her newfound expertise and a profound understanding of the economic disparities that plagued Central Brooklyn, La'Shawn embarked on a mission to effect transformative change.
Under La'Shawn's leadership, CBEDC has undergone a remarkable transformation. Her strategic vision and tireless dedication have breathed new life into the organization, making it a driving force for economic growth in Central Brooklyn. She has overseen the creation of innovative programs that support local entrepreneurs, job training programs, and youth development, including the development of the B'Ville Hub, the future home of Brownsville's first business center and trade school.
Last year, La'Shawn was awarded the Inaugural Just Brooklyn Prize. This prestigious award celebrates 5 individuals who have made exceptional strides in promoting social justice and equity in Brooklyn.
La'Shawn Allen-Muhammad is not only a trailblazing professional but also a dedicated mother and loving wife. She is married to Student Minister Henry Muhammad, and together, they have eight children ranging in age from 12 to 41. Her family provides her with the strength and motivation to continue her vital work, ensuring a brighter future for the next generation of Central Brooklyn residents.
