Description
Every neighborhood can be a pathway to opportunity and prosperity for the people who call it home, but race often determines the ease of that pathway. Purpose Built Communities and the Purpose Built Network partner with residents to execute a holistic model for equitable revitalization in neighborhoods around the country experiencing the effects of historic and chronic race-based disinvestment. Part of the success of our work depends on a new narrative. Where We Thrive is a narrative project that navigates place-based field advocates through the why, how, and what of resident-centered neighborhood revitalization, including strategies for addressing historical and present-day harms to communities while uplifting and affirming people, place, and race. Our session answers questions like: Why is narrative a racial equity issue? What narrative strategies can advocates deploy to build understanding and encourage collaboration? How can a field work better together to change a narrative?
